Frequently Asked Questions about FIND

1. Do you charge for your services and if so how much?

No, there is no charge for any of our services.

2. I have some questions about my child’s upcoming IEP. Can someone from your office come with me?

This question gets asked often. Because of limited resources we are not always able to attend school meetings with families. In a few cases we may be able to find someone who is experienced and knowledgeable to accompany you. First, call our office as a phone conversation may alleviate the concerns you have regarding your child’s upcoming IEP. If a phone call won’t suffice, we will schedule an appointment to meet with you. You will need to bring a copy of your child’s current IEP and any recent evaluations. We will work with you to prepare for your meeting.

3. How does No Child Left Behind affect my child who is in a special education program?

No Child Left Behind affects all students, and it can have great significance for your child. Please contact us for more specific information.

4. What is the difference between an IFSP and an IEP? My child will have an IEP next year and I am nervous.

The IFSP is not only a written document but a process that families of children ages birth to 3 years participate in when receiving services through First Steps. Whereas the IFSP focuses on the entire family as it relates to the child with a disability, the IEP is the plan that is written when your child needs services that deal specifically with your child’s educational program. We have some information on how to make a smooth transition from the IFSP to the IEP. Please call us with your questions.

5. I don’t think my child has a proper diagnosis: I think there are more things going on with her. Nothing we do at school or at home works.

FIND does not have staff that can evaluate your child or give your child a diagnosis. You can request another evaluation from the school for those areas that cause you concern. For more information and some guidance on how and when to request additional evaluations, please contact FIND of Louisville at .

6. What do I do when my child gets suspended from school?

There are provisions in the law that talk about suspensions and expulsions for children whose disability may cause frustration for the student and school personnel. Call our office at and ask for specific information about your child’s unique circumstances. We can provide some ideas to help you work with your child’s IEP team to include a Positive Behavior Support program in the IEP.

7. My child is 16 and I don’t have any idea what he’s going to do when he is finished with high school. Do you have any ideas?

There are many options available for students who graduate from special education programs. A transition plan needs to be developed and implemented as part of the IEP. Contact us at to find out what resources are available for your child and for information on writing a transition plan.
